 TOOTS ZYNSKY. GLASS SCULPTURE

From the 9th of March to the 5th of May, 2002, a selection of works by glass artist, Toots Zynsky will be exhibited in the Neoclassical rooms of the Museo Correr, in Venice. It will be a solo show, comprising about fifty works, carefully selected by the artist herself, that exemplifies the creative development of the artist from 1984 to present.
After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, (USA), Toots Zynsky worked under the direction of Dale Chilhuly. She dedicated her work exclusively to glass, also collaborating with Venini of Murano. There, in the eighties, she created the celebrated series of Folto and Chiacchera.
A result of this experience was the decision to work independently, to be free of any obligation brought about by industrial production. Her strong ties with Murano are underlined by the use of canes in her work.
These are exclusively produced on this island. The artist elaborated on their use with a system developed to fruition with the assistance of an Dutch engineer, transforming them into extremely fine threads of glass, creating fascinating colourful fabrics that give body to the suggestive works. Rather than vases, they are "sculptures" without a doubt, as they should rightly be considered.
Refined, perturbing and attracting, works as Pregustare and Irbis seem to resume all the elements of what Andre Breton called "convulsive beauty". A beauty caused by - writes Arthur C. Danto in the catalogue edited by Glasmuseet of Ebeltoft - a plurality of reasons: colours' intensity, the tactile vitality of materials, the perturbing energy of shapes and the stylistic motif (...) turned in a bright ensemble by the interaction between light and glass.
