ARCHITECTURE IN THE TERRITORY. CANTON TICINO 1970-2000

During the last thirty years, in the heart of Europe, an amazing number of private and public realizations has characterized a limited territory - the Ticino Canton - deeply marking the contemporary history of architecture.
Main actors of this history were a group of "local" architects of international stature (Mario Botta, Mario Campi, Aurelio Galfetti, Fabio Reinhart, Ruchat Flora, Luigi Snozzi,Livio Vacchini) that, with their activity, have contributed to the "resistance" of an important morphologic patrimony avoiding the process of architectonic and territorial standardization verifiable in many European regions during the same time.
In a period in which, above all in Italy, it has been assisted to a generalized inability to estimate critically the real specific situations, the Ticino has experimented how its "razionalist's movement" (proposing the plan as "critical element" and claiming for the architect the disciplinary space of spatial organisation) was able to proposing "what is expected by the site" against "what is expected by the client" preventing to the destruction of the complexities and diversity of the places and contributing, instead, to a critical reconstruction of the relations between differing urban fabrics.
To investigate this fortunately season the CD-Rom Architecture in the territory. Canton Ticino 1970-2000 by Mercedes Daguerre and Graziella Zannone Milan, published by Tarmac in Mendrisio, is structured with the double valence of classical guide-book in order to travel and didactic instrument for students and architects.
The work, in 4 languages, presents 260 buildings by more than 90 architects who, over the past 30 years, have characterized local architectural production, together to several and important critical contributions (Kenneth Frampton, Jacques Gubler, Roberto Masiero e Werner Oechslin).
Drawings, photos, biographies, bibliographies, video-interviews to the most preminent local architects and the promenades architecturales in seven of the most significant buildings make the work complete.
Finally, a strong point of this work is its continuity on internet: the modularity with which the information is organised allows for easy updating and development with interventions by critics and architects.
